Women on Wheels (WoW)

Looking to start a chapter in your community? Click here for a digital WoW Chapter Lead Toolkit! This guide will let you know what is expected of WoW Chapters, how to plan for weekly or monthly rides, and how BNS supports the WoW program.

Women on Wheels

WOW was started in Cape Breton in 2015 by Shelly Johnson as a beginner cycling group for women aged 50+ who had not ridden a bike in a long time. The program has grown and expanded over the years to include women of all ages, but still operates with the same goal of being a cycling group for beginners to advanced riders, with a welcoming atmosphere and an emphasis on the social aspect of cycling.

We welcome women of all ages who want to improve their cycling skills, become more confident cycling on roads, or are returning to cycling after a hiatus and prefer cycling on trails.

Our experience tells us that regular organized rides that are led by women encourage more women to ride, and when women ride, families do too. If you’d like to start a WoW group in your community, please contact us and we’ll help you start a group close to home.

WoW Lunenburg has several ride options that take place, often on Mondays. There are two groups of WoW Riders in Lunenburg:

The Back in the Saddle group is great for women in the area that haven’t ridden a bike in a few years. Ride distances are between 10km-20km in length and usually have an hours worth of ride time (plus some stops at Cafes and other points of interest along the way). These rides take place at least once a month.

WoW Lunenburg Tourista riders tend to prefer rides of 20km or more. This group is great to join as you become more confident in the saddle and want to explore more of  beautiful Lunenburg County!
