City Nature Challenge

April 29, 2022 - May 2, 2022

Nova Scotian cyclists are being challenged to participate in the global City Nature Challenge and help highlight species distribution in our province. The City Nature Challenge is a friendly international citizen science event designed to connect people to nature while helping track wildlife species distribution around the globe.

Three areas in NS (HRM; CBRM; the Valley (Annapolis and Kings Counties) are registered to participate in the global CNC. This 4-day event will take place between April 29 to May 2. Participants are encouraged to get outdoors, explore, observe nature, and share observations of wildlife (plants and animals) using the iNaturalist app or by uploading observations online at iNaturalist.ca

Participants may post observations from any location within the 3 registered areas. They could explore their backyards or local parks and trails. We are hoping that cyclists will use the CNC as an opportunity to get out and explore areas such as the Trans Canada Trail. Perhaps cyclists can reach areas not normally frequented by the average iNatter. It would be fantastic if there could be iNat observations from every kilometer marker along sections of the trail that fall within the CNC areas!

The CNC tracks the number of participants, the number of observations, and the number of species. For the NS entries to be successful will require participation from the whole community. It is not necessary to know the name of the species photographed – they can be assigned a generic name such as plant, bird, insect, spruce tree, or deer. Every observation counts!
