Present: Simon Myatt, Jim Trussler, Gavin Giles, Suzanne Lamb, Friedemann Brauer, Terry Tomlin, Ed Rushton, Bob White
Guests: Ted Scrutton, Laurie Cook
Mr. Scrutton was invited to the meeting to discuss provincial government funding options for BNS. BNS has the option to change its organizational status from a Provincial Recreation Organization to a Provincial Sport Organization. This would enable BNS to receive annual “block” funding through Sport Nova Scotia. Mr. Scrutton also distributed an information pamphlet on Funding Provincial Organizations.
Mr. Scrutton explained that the assessment for funding as a sport organization through Sport Nova Scotia is very detailed, and is based on competitiveness (competition results) and size of membership. He feels that BNS receives higher funding as a recreation organization through the Department of Health Promotion and Protection (the lowest funding for any recreation organization is $6,000/year) than through Sport Nova Scotia (where the lowest funding is $1,000/year). Mr. Scrutton also noted that BNS will receive an extra $2,000 in funding this year.
The Board would like to invite Blaise Landry, the Sport Consultant with the Department of Health Promotion and Protection, to a meeting to discuss the Sport NS funding structure.
Objectives:
1. To access the challenges and opportunities
BNS is facing
2. To develop an organizational vision
3. To create long-term goals
Laurie Cook chaired a Strategic Planning Session with the Board members for the remainder of the meeting. Laurie is preparing a separate report to summarize the strategic planning session.
Next Board Meeting:
