Rules for Cyclists

  • Wear a helmet every time you ride.
  • Stop before you ride onto the road.
  • Bicycles are vehicles, just like cars:
    • Always ride on the right side of the road.
    • Stop at stop signs (foot down).
    • Obey traffic lights.
    • Before you turn, do a shoulder check, then signal with your arm.
    • Yield to right-of-way traffic and to pedestrians.
    • Use front and rear lights when riding in the dark.
  • Ride predictably - don't weave in and out between parked cars.
  • Don't ride too close to parked cars - their doors could be opened suddenly.
  • Don't carry bags on your handlebars, it makes the bicycle unstable.
  • Only children are allowed to cycle on the sidewalk.
Children under the age of ten generally do not have the necessary skills to cycle safely in traffic by themselves.
