This represents a good performance by this young cyclist who was called up at the last minute to replace his injured teammate, Stuart Wight. "I'm really happy with how I did, as a 3 km strength course is not really my thing... I'm also happy because I know I definitely have a shot at the road race," said Ryan MacDonald, the 2010 Canadian Road Race Champion. Ryan will compete again on Sunday in the Road race. MacDonald completed the 3.2 kilometre course in four minutes, 09.61 seconds, 12 seconds behind the gold medalist, Rafael Ferreira Reis of Portugal. On Tuesday, Steve Noble (Glencairn, ON) finished 13th of the Men's Mountain Bike event. Noble finished the course with a time of 1:03.34, trailing the gold medalist just under five minutes. In the Women's cross country, Canadian Kristina Laforge (Alma, QC) came third with a time of 49.22, two minutes behind the leader and eight seconds behind the second place. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Cyclebetes 2010Cyclesmith is involved in a fundraiser called Cyclebetes, which is a fundraising and awareness ride for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The ride format is in a relay style on a tandem, where an experienced cyclists is teamed up with a Type 1 Diabetic (typically a youth), and they ride together for 60km on the tandem, then pass the tandem onto the next team of two. The relay is broken into 5 regions/teams: Maritimes, Quebec, Ontario east, Ontario West, Prairies and BC. Each region has a community ride component, and seeing as the relay is starting in Halifax Nova Scotia, we are trying to get riders out for the kickoff. The Halifax Community Ride is on August 14, 2010 at Point Pleasant Park. It's the kick off to a national cycling relay across Canada raising money for Juvenile Diabetes to find a cure. There is a kids/family ride of 5k and 10k and a 100km for more avid cyclists. The 5 and 10 kms are near the park (maps will be provided) and the 100km ride to Truro begins with the National ride from Halifax to Victoria. Come along to the Community Cycling Festival and Kick off ceremony for the National Team and enjoy: - Entertainment and morning music in the park Come to ride or just come to cheer on the other riders. It should be great fun for all ages and skill levels. You can register online and get more information by going to the Cyclebetes Halifax Website - Location: Black Rock Beach, Point Pleasant Park, Halifax
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Nova Scotia's Ryan MacDonald Canada's Best!(From National Cycling Centre Website) In the women's race, an early attack by Veronique Drapeau-Zgoralski (Team Quebec) was reeled in and Annie Ewart (Cycling BC) tried her hand at soloing off the front, a next to impossible feat because of the strong wind in the town south of Edmonton. It was finally a group sprint that decided the three podium spots with Drapeau-Zgoralski winning the top honour. Elodie Gillard (Atrium-CC2R) and Elisabeth Albert (Team Quebec) completed the women's podium in second and third. "I tried a break away early on the main climb and to my surprise gained a lot of time. They reeled me in a bit later when the tailwind started," commented Drapeau-Zgoralski "Once I saw the line, I looked for an opening and there it was on the right. This title is amazing. I still can't believe it!" On the men's side, a breakaway that took off 45 minutes into the race had the Canadian champion within its ranks. Eight riders distanced the main group, at one point growing their lead to over six minutes. On the last climb, 25km from the finish line, Ryan MacDonald (Atrium-CC2R) blew away from the break to cross the line first to win the Canadian title. Only Frederic Poisson (Team Quebec) kept him in sight. At the finish line, MacDonald looked over his shoulder to see Poisson take second and Devan McClelland (Cycling BC) crossed the line in third, one minute, 24 seconds behind the winner. "The winning break got away in a peculiar way, we attacked and the peloton just sat up. I guess they thought it was just another false alarm," said MacDonald. "As a breakaway group, we worked very well together... But I saw everybody waning at one point and that is where I attacked...The learning's from our national team development camps in Europe really paid off today," added MacDonald.
